Икона написана для местного ряда придела Василия Блаженного собора Покрова что на Рву.
В последствии весь храм на Красной площади стали именовать в честь этого придела.

После войны 1812 г. на этом месте разобьют Александровский сад.

Конечно же, местность во второй половине XIX в. выглядела по-другому, и на картине мы видим историческую фантазию художника.

Опять же, когда писалась картина, местность уже выглядела по-другому. Но изображенные две церкви (колокольня второй видна справа вдали) совершенно реальны: Церковь Спаса на Песках в Спасопесковском переулке и церковь Николы в Плотниках, стоявшей на пересечении Арбата и Плотникова переулка (ныне рядом с этим местом стоит памятник Окуджаве).
В ходе нашей экскурсии по Арбату мы всегда показываем репродукцию картины и точное место, с которого открывается такой же вид на церковь, а также рассказываем почему именно это место было выбрано Поленовым.

Загородный ресторан Яр располагался в перестроенном здании гостиницы Советская на Ленинградском шоссе.

Девичье поле некогда занимало большую территорию перед Новодевичьим монастырем. Ныне оно застроено больничным городком вдоль Б.Пироговской улицы, а название Девичьего поля носит небольшой треугольный сквер между Плющихой, Б.Пироговской и одноименным проездом.

Художники очень любили гостиницу Балчуг за замечательные виды из окна.
Также на картине видна застройка Васильевского спуска, снесенная в середине 1930-х

Никольские ворота тогда сильно пострадали в ходе боев и выглядели следующим образом:

Обратите внимание, что на месте мавзолея в начале 1920-х стоял памятник пламенному рабочему.

Это вид из Нижнего Кисловского переулка рядом с Арбатской площадью.
В 1997 году эта оригинальная раскраска дома, сделанная Маяковским и Родченко, была восстановлена.

Ныне Пушкинская площадь. Стоявшая посредине площади церковь Дмитрия Солунского, разрушенная в начале 1930-х для расширения Тверской улицы.

Интересны даже не столько башни, сколько пейзаж вокруг. Таким он оставался практически до 1960-х пока не построили спорткомплекс Лужники.

Скромное название картины появилось, надо думать позже, т.к. на картине явно изображено так и не оконченное строительство Дворца Советов на месте Храма Христа Спасителя. Эпохальная подразумевалась картина, но не вышло, пришлось сменить название на более скромное.

Весь квартал слева снесен, ныне там просто сквер с фонтаном. Малоэтажная застройка справа снесена для строительства комплекса зданий газеты «Известия».
